Cinco de Mayo is Thursday May 5, 2011, but in the Bay Area, people are celebrating all week long. Highlights include the Cinco de Mayo Festival in San Francisco’s Dolores Park, and the Cinco de Mayo Parade and Festival in Oakland. A few others are listed below, but this list is far from complete. OAKLAND: Cinco de Mayo Parade and Festival
WHAT: This free East Bay 5 de Mayo celebration features musicians and dancers on three stages, a parade featuring a “Banda de Guerra” military marching band & Charros on horseback, exhibits from local artists, Mexican cuisine, including street vendors, a Kid Zone, and more. This free event draws more than 70,000 people.
WHEN: Sunday, May 1, 2011, 11am – 5pm. Parade starts at 11am.
WHERE: International Boulevard from 35th Avenue to Fruitvale Avenue up Fruitvale Avenue to E. 17th Street in Oakland, CA.
SANTA ROSA: Roselands Cinco de Mayo Celebration
WHAT: This free family event features live music, dance of ballet folkloric, food, and kids activities.
WHEN: Thursday May 5, 2011, 4pm – 10pm.
WHERE: 650 Sebastopol Road, Santa Rosa, CA.
SAN FRANCISCO: Cinco de Mayo Festival
WHAT: This free and alcohol-free family-friendly San Francisco celebration draws more than 5,000 people. Featured activities include Mexican and Latino foods, music, diverse cultural performances such as traditional Aztec dancers, Mexican folk dancers, Los Ensambles Ballet Folklorico, mariachi music, Latin Jazz, salsa, and more. Family activities include a Kids Zone.
WHEN: Saturday May 7, 2011. 10am – 6pm.
WHERE: Dolores Park, Dolores Street, San Francisco, CA 94114.
SAUSALITO: The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta
WHAT: This family-friendly event (not free) features traditional Mexican music, dance performances, and crafts. Outdoor performances include Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Carlos Moreno, at 11 am, followed by the music of Mariachi Los Cachorros, or The Puppies, at noon. Children’s activities include making paper and tin crafts at Studio10. Enjoy a special Cinco de Mayo menu at The Café Discovery. Admission to the museum required ($10/adults, $8/child & senior).

WHERE: Bay Area Discovery Museum, 557 McReynolds R0ad, Sausalito, CA.
HAYWARD: Viva Mexico
WHAT: This free all-day Cinco de Mayo event features Aztec dances, childre3n’s piñatas, games, and other family friendly Viva Mexico activities, co-sponsored by the Hayward Public Library and the City of Hayward.
WHEN: May 7, 2011, 10am – 7pm.
WHERE: City Hall Plaza, 777 B Street, Hayward, CA.
