San Francisco Solar Powered Bus Shelter with Free Wi-Fi

solar bus shelter san franciscoIf you’re looking for free Wi-Fi in the City, you may soon find it at your nearest bus shelter, along with a few other high-tech perks. San Francisco’s first solar powered bus shelter, complete with Wi-Fi, made its debut today in San Francisco’s Richmond District at Geary and Arguello Boulevards. The first of 1,100 similar structures planned by 2013, the new shelter will harness the sun’s rays to power a push-button update system, intercom, LED lighting, and free Wi-Fi. The steel structure is made from 75 percent recycled materials.

As more of these solar bus shelters pop up along Market Street, they should begin feeding back energy into the city’s electrical grid — and providing convenient opportunities to fire up the old laptop.

In the meantime, check out our new and ever expanding list of Bay Area free WI-Fi hotspots.
