Mavericks Surf Competition, Half Moon Bay

mavericks

Good news for surf fans: The Mavericks surf competition has been announced in Half Moon Bay.

At the world famous surf spot known as Mavericks, the big waves break up to 40 ft high or higher. Two dozen big-wave surfers have been invited to participate.

Spectators are usually discouraged from watching live or at least asked to be respectful of the surrounding sensitive natural habitat. If you don’t go there in person, you can always watch the surf contest live webcast on Ustream or watch it on FloTV. You can also attend the San Francisco Viewing Party at AT&T Park ($20 if you buy online, $25 at the door).

WHAT’S THE DEAL: The Mavericks Surf Contest is Free to watch.

WHEN: February 13, 2010, kick-off at 8am.

WHERE: Pillar Point Harbor, just north of Half Moon Bay. You’ll find the action about a mile off shore in Princeton-by-the Sea, about 4 miles north of Half Moon Bay and 25 miles south of San Francisco.

UPDATE: The event was a huge success with clear as glass 40ft waves. I watched from up on the hill with binoculars to avoid the crowd. But I walked out to Mav’s with my husband and dog the day after. A smaller local crowd enjoyed the sunny warm day and a few surfers rode the waves just for fun. Here’s a pic, taken by my surf-loving husband at racingonthecheap.com (copyright protected).
