Litquake Literary Festival – Free/Cheap

Litquake (October 1-9, 2010), San Francisco’s literary festival showcases hundreds of Bay Area writers for a week of readings, discussions, films, cross-media happenings and more. If you only go to one Litquake event, LitCrawl (October 9) is fun and it’s free. LitCrawl is a three-hour progressive reading winding its way all around the Mission District. Kidquake 2010 (October 5-7) offers free literary enlightenment for children.

Highlights: of Litquake 2010: 4th annual Barbary Coast Award to legendary literary figure Lawrence Ferlinghetti, with appearance by author, and rock-n-roll high priestess Patti Smith, Winona Ryder, Michael McClure and New Yorker cartoonist Eric Drooker, Ishmael Reed, Jack Hirschman, devorah major, with music by The Marcus Shelby Quartet.

Featured authors include Jonathan Lethem Joyce Maynard * Exene Cervenka * Martin Cruz Smith * Daniel Alarcon * Terry McMillan * Andrew Sean Greer * Daniel Handler * Kristen Schaal (of The Daily Show) * Rebecca Solnit (with her new Infinite City) * Mark W Moffet (called the Indiana Jones of entomology for his book Adventures Among Ants) and two Pulitzer Prize winners—TJ Stiles and Richard Rhodes.

DEAL: Litquake 2010 tickets start at FREE (All LitCrawl events are free). Some events are cheap, $5 – $10. Tickets available at litquake.org.
