Point Bonita Lighthouse (by bastique)
In the San Francisco Bay Area, and notoriously expensive Marin County especially, just taking a walk can cost you — if you like guided walking tours and hikes, that is. Fortunately, the Sierra Club’s many Bay Area chapters offer terrific organized hikes, for free or cheap and from easy to adventurous. Check out their hiking schedule.
There’s a hike on Saturday to Point Bonita Lighthouse that sounds like fun, lead by the Sierra Club’s San Francisco Bay Chapter (you can even bring your dog!):
Hike to spectacular Point Bonita Lighthouse and enjoy lunch overlooking the Golden Gate. Cross the magnificent swinging bridge to the rocky precipice that the light house was constructed on. Return by Rodeo Beach along the Coastal Trail. Spectacular ocean views. Moderate pace. 13 miles with 3,000′ elevation gain. Return by 4:30 pm. Heavy rain cancels.
What’s cool about the Point Bonita Lighthouse is it still uses its original Fresnel lens to cast a beacon for mariners. It’s a great place to stop for lunch and soak up the historical ambiance. The views from coastal trail home aren’t to shabby either.
