Bicycle Maintenance On The Cheap
It’s great to save money by riding a bike around San Francisco instead of driving. It’s even better to maintain your bike yourself among friends at the Bike Kitchen, a do-it-yourself donation-based bicycle resource run by volunteers.
We’re told it’s not the least bit intimidating, even if you’re all thumbs. If you like riding bikes, you’ll find these folks like-minded with the hearts of teachers. They also hold small group classes.
For a small annual membership fee on a sliding scale of $40–100 a year, you can use the tools and get expert help to keep your bike running smoothly. Or you can pay $5 for the day. The Bike Kitchen now has new digs that offer 22 workstations with tools, parts, and volunteer mechanics.
